By the time we woke today, our ship had docked at the port in Miami. I was especially pleased not to be fingerprinted on entry into the US this time, and slipping into the country through a port proved to be infinitely less problematic than our arrival at Miami Airport more than two weeks ago.
We found our hotel, the Casa Victoria Orchid, not far from South Beach, only to be told they had oversold their rooms, and they had arranged for us to be placed in their sister hotel. The hotel paid for our taxi to our substitute hotel, the Hotel Victor, and when we arrived we found we were right by the beach and this was a much better hotel than the first! This new hotel is almost twice the price, but we're enjoying it at no extra expense. And something I've never seen before anywhere - guests are allowed to phone anywhere in the world for free, provided they call a landline. So we called Jean's parents. All an excellent little birthday present for Jean, and 25th wedding anniversary gift to us both.
Because we arrived at the Hotel Victor early, our room wasn't ready. So we walked along Ocean Drive, dipped our feet in the water at South Beach, walked along a promenade that straddles the beach, ate lunch at a 'Diner' ( looked like a train carriage), and eventually we were allowed to check in. We went out again afterwards for a swim at the beach, and another at the hotel's pool.
A swim at South Beach means a swim in the Atlantic. The last time we did that was at Biarritz in France in 2013.
South Beach - we returned later to find the beach teeming with swimmers and sun worshippers. It's the Spring (college) break at the moment, so students flock to Miami. It's a bit like our 'schoolies week' back home. Plenty of young people, loud music, the smell of pot in the air, and inflated hotel prices.
